Delivering Genetic Improvement to the Shrimp Industry

SyAqua genetically improved Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) broodstock are supplied from SyAqua selective breeding program to the international shrimp farming industry.

Origin of Broodstock Lines

SyAqua Broodstock lines are prized by many of the leading broodstock suppliers around the world. They are primarily derived from domesticated P. vannamei, Hawaii stock (1983) and Domesticated Litopenaeus vannamei, Venezuela/Mexico stock (1984).A genetic pool of other domestication programs have been collated and integrated in the SyAqua Breeding programs.

SyAqua foundation Broodstock lines incorporate over twenty years of development at the Hawaii's Oceanic Institute. Top performing families for both growth and Taura resistance were incorporated in SyAqua foundation broodstock in 2002.

As the primary researchers in line development for the U.S. Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology, Advanced Technology Program (ATP), the SyAqua team as a division of Sygen with sister company PIC created broodstock lines from the foundation broodstock that are continue to be developed by SyAqua scientists for economic traits including growth rates, disease resistance and survival.

Breeding programs in Hawaii(USA), Kentucky(USA), Brazil, Mexico, Thailand and Saipan(USA) were intergrally linked in a global breeding program strategy with common underlying traits and specific local enviromental conditions.

Our breeding programs are derived from large number of families, with a broad genetic base and incorporate intense selection on each generation using combination of family selection, mass selection (WFS) and marker assisted selection. The programs maintain population inbreeding at less than 1% per year to enable sustainable long term genetic improvement.

The broodstock are offspring from a select group of top performing families selected for rapid growth, TSV resistance, and high pond survival.

TSV resistance is determined bioassay laboratory challenge tests. Families are exposed to TSV isolates from US (USTX95), Belize (BH01), Thailand (TH04) and Venezuela (VE05).

Between and within family selection Genetic selection is undertaken from data collated and analysed from raceway, pond and bioassy trial.

Specific Pathogen Free (SPF)

SyAqua broodstock are specific pathogen free (SPF) and supplied with a Health cerificate from recognised Pathology Laboratories.

SyAqua facilities are maintained at Premium Health Status SPF status with strict biosecure systems and stringent health monitoring program to maintain this prestigious health status.
